Here’s some news that is sure to disappoint electric vehicle enthusiasts, especially fans of the Volkswagen brand: the automaker has officially announced that the ID.7 will not be coming to North America. In fact, the model has already been removed from the Canadian Volkswagen website.
The anticipation for Volkswagen’s large electric sedan, the ID.7, has been building for quite some time. The model was first revealed in 2023, with its official launch taking place in February 2024. At the time, Volkswagen announced plans to eventually bring the model to North America, with its arrival pushed to early 2025. Unfortunately, after careful consideration, it seems Volkswagen has had a change of heart, as the ID.7 will no longer be available in North America in the coming months as initially planned.
Why?
That’s the question on everyone’s mind right now, and it’s a valid one. What could lead a manufacturer to reverse its decision so late in the process?
In my opinion, several factors could explain the situation, starting with the fact that various EV purchase incentive programs are being phased out across North America. It’s possible that Volkswagen was relying on these incentives to ensure a strong launch for the ID.7 in the market.
Another major factor is that the ID.7 is a sedan, not an SUV—a significant disadvantage in North America. A quick drive down any road will reveal that the majority of new vehicles on the road are SUVs. Sedans are still around, but they’re typically luxury models.
Let’s not forget that the ID.Buzz, the modern reincarnation of the iconic Westfalia, has just hit the market. Volkswagen may simply want to focus on the ID.Buzz and avoid overshadowing its launch with the addition of a new model too soon.
A Missed Opportunity?
Whatever the reasons behind Volkswagen’s decision, the fact remains that the ID.7 will not be coming to Canada, and perhaps not to North America at all. Who knows—maybe the German automaker has something else in mind, and an even more exciting model is on the horizon.
