What Volkswagen Announced at the World Premiere of the ID. Tiguan

Volkswagen has pulled the covers off the ID. Tiguan, one of the most important electric models in its plans for the years ahead. This new all-electric SUV takes the name of Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide and lands in the busy mid-size class.

The premiere was packed with news, from power and range figures to a new passenger screen and a few playful surprises. To keep things simple, we sorted the biggest announcements into one easy list.

1. The Tiguan Name Goes Electric

Volkswagen plans for the ID. Tiguan to succeed the ID.4, one of the brand’s most successful electric vehicles.

In Europe, the new electric model will be sold in parallel with the current gas-powered Tiguan. The ID. Tiguan is built in Emden, Germany, while the Tiguan comes from Wolfsburg.

2. Three Powertrains and Up to 600 km of Range

The ID. Tiguan sits on Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform and comes in three performance levels:

  • 140 kW (188 hp), rear-wheel drive, 58 kWh battery
  • 210 kW (282 hp), rear-wheel drive, 77 kWh battery
  • 220 kW (295 hp), 4MOTION all-wheel drive, 77 kWh battery

Depending on the version, range reaches up to 600 km on the European WLTP test cycle.

3. Up to 4,409 lbs (2,000 kg) of Towing

Towing was a headline item. The ID. Tiguan can tow up to 3,968 lbs (1,800 kg) with the 58 kWh battery and up to 4,409 lbs (2,000 kg) with the 77 kWh battery. Both figures carry the Tiguan’s reputation as a practical, hard-working SUV into the electric era.

4. A New Pure Positive Design

The ID. Tiguan is the latest Volkswagen styled under the Pure Positive design language. The softer crossover look of the ID.4 has been replaced by a stronger SUV design with precise lines and tightly sculpted surfaces. Volkswagen says the result looks like it belongs in the premium segment. Classic pull-style door handles also make a return.

5. A Three-Screen Dash With a Passenger Display

The ID. Tiguan debuts a new display layout. A 10-inch digital cockpit sits ahead of the driver, and a 15-inch infotainment screen sits in the middle of the dash.

The big news is the available 12-inch co-driver display, a first for a European Volkswagen. Together, the three screens create one continuous display across the dash. The passenger screen handles infotainment, information and games, and a privacy mode hides it from the driver, much like a privacy screen on a laptop. In privacy mode, the passenger listens through paired Bluetooth headphones.

6. Physical Buttons Make a Comeback

Volkswagen says customer feedback guided the ID. Tiguan’s development, and controls were a clear focus. The climate system uses a button bar in the centre console. A centre console controller adjusts audio volume and changes stations or tracks. The multifunction steering wheel switches from touch controls to physical buttons, and the driver’s door gets a redesigned window switch panel.

7. Golf IV Gauges and a Virtual Garage

The most playful reveal was the set of “Retro” displays. Press the “View” button on the steering wheel, and the digital cockpit shows the blue and red instruments of a Golf IV. A classic speedometer sits on the left. On the right, a stylized rev counter shows the energy flow of the electric drive.

The central screen gets a matching “Retro” view. For the first time, drivers can personalize it by choosing from six Volkswagen models in a virtual garage: the Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, Tiguan I, Race Touareg and Beetle.

8. Driver Assistance That Stops at Red Lights

One-pedal driving is standard. It allows strong slowing using the accelerator pedal alone. The available Connected Travel Assist can help with lane changes on highways and can automatically stop the ID. Tiguan at red traffic lights. These systems work within their limits, and the driver remains responsible.

9. Comfort and Convenience Options

Volkswagen also showed a long list of available features:

  • Power front seats with massage, memory and ventilation
  • A 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system and a panoramic sunroof
  • Digital Key for compatible smartphones, shareable through the Volkswagen app
  • PowerSocket adapter for Vehicle-to-Load power through the charging port
  • Two Qi2 wireless charging pads with magnetic phone rings

10. A European Launch in Early 2027

The ID. Tiguan seats five and offers up to 534 L of cargo space plus a 32 L frunk. In Europe, it comes in four equipment levels and launches in early 2027. After that European launch, Volkswagen plans to share North American timing, pricing and model details.
