I am among those who believe that the future of electric vehicles lies in collaboration. Since the Covid-19 crisis, production costs as well as research and development expenses have skyrocketed. Sharing knowledge among different manufacturers allows for significant savings.
Major automakers can also benefit from the creativity of young companies, while the latter can gain financial support from industry giants. This is exemplified by Rivian and Volkswagen, who are working together on the next e-Golf.
Indeed, Volkswagen intends to offer the next generation of the Golf exclusively as an electric model. It’s clear that fans of the Golf GTI and Golf R won’t be thrilled by the news. However, this 100% electric Golf promises to be very exciting thanks to Rivian’s involvement. The two companies have signed a $5.8 billion agreement, which is no small deal.
Volkswagen will therefore use the SSP platform for the ninth generation of the Golf. Meanwhile, Rivian’s expertise will be highly valuable for the software accompanying the model.
Yes, we’re in 2024, not 2029. But this number refers to the year the ninth-generation Golf is expected to launch. So, those eagerly awaiting it will need to be patient.
We now know that Rivian will work on the next generation of the Golf. However, several sources have also hinted that the company, which specializes in electric vehicles, will lend its expertise to Audi and Porsche as well. Needless to say, we’re eager to see the vehicles that will emerge from this alliance.
